One of my three cosmetic bags and organic loot
Last week I posted about my morning skincare routine and we received plenty of emails with curious questions as well as interest in the makeup products I use. You should probably know that I have been experimenting and playing with makeup since I was a pre-teen and first discovered Love's Baby Soft by my very sophisticated teenaged babysitter. Her name was Norchanta and to me she was the epitome of glamour. Tall, lanky with perfect teeth, a wide smile and the best brown almond shaped eyes I had ever seen, she was knockout gorgeous. As a matter of fact, every time I see Malia Obama in photos or on tv she reminds me so much of Norchanta and I smile at her blossoming beauty. Besides the Love's Baby Soft I was introduced to globby lipglosses, powdery blue eye shadows, and blushes in hot pink and shades of brown completely wrong for my olive skin. That's what we had back then, but it didn't stop me from becoming a fiend for makeup. I became a little girl obsessed!
These days makeup is not my obsession as much as high end skincare has become because as I learned many years later, it is much more coveted to have pretty skin than a face full of clownish looking makeup. (Believe me, there was a reason my brother called me "clown face" back then.) It's pretty ironic the lengths I now go to so to appear as though I'm not wearing makeup. I only play it up for special occasions or evenings out about town. During the day I prefer to keep things fairly simply. As you will read not everything in my beauty arsenal is 100% clean, but close! I usually start with a good concealer and I like Josie Maran's Argan Blend Concealer in Suede as well as the super luxurious RMS "Un" Cover-Up in 33. Generally, I use my fingers to lightly dab little spots onto areas around my nose, forehead and cheeks and blend in. I don't use concealer around my eyes because I don't need it (thanks to my savior and beauty rockstar Decouverte Under Eye Repair Serum) and I don't like to cake on products under my eyes as I believe it can appear very aging in that area. Less is truly more in this case. After I apply my concealer I use Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation in 125 or for more sheer coverage I like Nvey Eco Moisture Rich Fluid Foundation in 512 I like how light and sheer the coverage is and it's made with chamomile, calendula, and rose oil and smells incredible! For evenings out I may also use a little mattifying powder and Nvey Eco makes a great nude one. During the day I prefer to look "dewy" so after I apply my "fake skin" I add a few drops of Daily Elements Defense Face Oil right over my makeup to give myself a very fresh and healthy glow. I have rather large round eyes and I like to highlight them as they are my best feature. Tip: one should always focus on their best or favorite part of their face and become an expert in that area. During the day I like a very toned down look. Last summer I was crazy about RMS Beauty Cream Eye Shadow in Solar (stay tuned for a neat trick I learned with this same product) and I will soon begin wearing it again. A little goes a long way with this and I usually dab just the tiniest amount on my middle finger and apply on my lid, but blend in with a brush otherwise I find I add too much and the key to this gorgeous product is not applying too much so it doesn't crease and lasts all day. I am not a fan of loose makeup. I find them messy and because I'm accident prone, loose makeup either ends up on my blouse or bathroom sink and then I have to scrub it, which will lead me to feeling compelled to wipe down the faucet handles and then the mirrors...I won't go into my cleaning obsession, but you get the picture! I used to be a huge Bobbi Brown fan and I loved her cute little compact palettes in luscious earth tones that looked so wonderful on me. I am seeking that in organic makeup and can't wait for the day I can have that again. What has come close as far as the luscious colors are concerned are the Kjaer Weis Eye Shadow Compacts in Cloud Nine, Earth Calm, Onxy, Wisdom, Divine, Charmed, and a pretty purple I use for evening. They are fantastic colors and apply easily with a medium shadow brush. To make my eyes even bigger I like to line the lids with a very dark powder liner from Nvey Eco or Dr. Hauschka's luxe Eyeliner Duo or for Adele-like cat eyes for night time I adore the smooth crisp finish of a liquid eyeliner and Ligne Blackstar by Terry is the absolute best. It has a very precise tip for easy application from even the shakiest hands. I once watched a pro makeup artist transform a blonde eyelashed beauty into a bombshell with this eyeliner. I was hooked! I was using a mineral mascara that I LOVED from Kiehls, but it's now discontinued and I just finished my last tube about a month ago. (It hurt me to throw out that tube, it really did.) I haven't found anything clean as good although I heard enough amazing things about Ilia Mascara in Nightfall that I bought some, but am waiting to finish my Maybelline Great Lash in Blackest Black to try it. (A little Danish birdie told me she's releasing a mascara this year and I'll be waiting excitedly to try it.) I am a huge fan of the Ilia Beauty lipsticks and Crimson & Clover and Arabian Nights are smooth, sultry and sexy shades to rock at night at the salsa club for sure! For my cheeks I can't rave enough about my friend Kirsten Kjaer Weis's creamy compact blushes. Now, I was one of those people that used to be fearful of cream blushes because I felt they caused breakouts. Moving on many light years ahead I know better and also know that cream blushes last longer as well as feel and look more natural on the skin. I have three of the Kjaer Weis creamy compacts in Abundance, Sun Touched, (perfect for medium skin) and Desired Glow. I need to add Joyful and Blossoming to my collection, especially for Spring. I also like Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi Use Stain in Enchant and when I do use a powder blush I really like Dr. Hauschka Rouge Powder in Desert Rose. I have yet to try the RMS Lip 2 Cheek colors, Revolution Organics, and Ilia Beauty for my cheeks. I know and I will! I also need to try Studio 78 Paris soon because I love the name and the packaging is very chic and artistic. For my lips I keep it basic during the day. I am crazy for high quality lip balms. I love John Masters Organics Lip Calm and Hurraw Lip Balms in Sun Protection, Licorice, Green Tea, heck all of them! We make an awesome lip treatment for super chapped lips called La Curacio and I carry several of those handy as I hate to see anyone with chapped, dry lips. Free lip treatment bombing at Starbucks is both fun and a little weird, but hey I do what I can to help hydrating seeking souls. So there you have it, my makeup routine in a nutshell.
Kjaer Weis Cream Blush In Joyful
It may seem like a lot, but I can get my makeup on rather quickly. It takes me all of 5-7 minutes. I spend more time on my skincare and applying oils and serums onto my skin than I do applying mascara. As I mentioned before, a beautiful work of art starts with a clean canvas and all the makeup in the world can't cover up congested and un-healthy skin. I also tend to avoid a lot of shimmer because I think that it's for younger skin types. It's also best for more mature and those with large pores to avoid shimmers and metallics as they tend to bring attention to those issues. Oh, as far as my little RMS Beauty secret is concerned I like blending Solar with a touch of Living Luminizer and applying it right on my temples, bridge of my nose, and on my cheekbones for a "natural-fake sun kissed" glow. Trust me it looks wonderful in the summertime and people will think you've been strolling the beach instead of wrapped in blankets on the couch in Chicago.
If you have any makeup suggestions or colors you think I should try, please let me know! I often hear about new lines from word of mouth or from my favorite bloggers. Incidentally, Norchanta is all grown up and a few years ago she came to celebrate with my family for my Mom's retirement party. She was still tall, lanky, and gorgeous, but this time she asked me how I made my eyes look so huge!
